Granite is a type of intrusive igneous rock. It is very strong, making it a popular choice for buildings. Graniteis composed mostly of quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase. It forms from magma. The magma has a high content of silica and alkali metal oxides that slowly cools and solid, making it a good choice for home improvement projects, as it is durable and will last for many years.
The relative proportion of different colored minerals in a granite is largely due to the original source of molten rock that cooled to form the granite. So, if the molten rock was abundant in potassium feldspar, the granite is more likely to take on a salmon pink color(ref: Why Granite Colors Range From White To Black).
Furthermore, the combination of the minerals below make up most of the colors we typically see in a granite:
- Quartz – typically milky white color
- Feldspar – typically off-white color
- Potassium Feldspar – typically salmon pink color
- Biotite – typically black or dark brown color
- Muscovite – typically metallic gold or yellow color
- Amphibole – typically black or dark green color
َAdvantages of granite stone:
- Affordable.
- Each piece of granite is unique.
- Resists Chips and Scratches.
- Heat Resistant.
- Stain Resistant.
- High resistance to environmental factors.
- High strength and durability.
- Can be used in high traffic places.
Disadvantages of granite stone:
- Granite Can Be Expensive.
- Granite needs to be sealed regularly.
- low color variation.
- Poor absorption.
- High cost of processing.
- high cost of installation.
- The speed of implementing granite is low.
Uses of granite stone:
Granite in antiquity
- The Red Pyramid of Egypt (circa 2590 BC).
- Pyramid of Menkaure.
- The Great Pyramid of Giza (c. 2580 BC).
Granite in modern
Buildings
Granite has been extensively used as a dimension stone and as flooring tiles in public and commercial buildings and monuments.
- Decorative stone in modern and classic facades.
- Internal and external floors of construction, commercial and office projects, elevator floors.
- In the landscaping of buildings and paving stones.
- Stepping stones and stepping stones Various walls, including lobby, parking lot, staircase.
- Stairs and sidewalks.
Engineering
Granite tables are extensively used as bases for optical instruments, CMMs, and very high precision CNC machines. The reasons are granite’s rigidity, high dimensional stability, and excellent vibration characteristics.
